Paul Smernicki is a veteran of the UK music industry who spent seventeen years working his way up Universal Music UK. He ran Fiction Records signing bands including Snow Patrol and The Maccabees, before focusing on digital, eventually becoming Group Director of Digital.
This is a really practical podcast where Paul gives advice to young musicians on how they can use digital platforms to find an audience, release music themselves and advance their careers. He talks about how services like Spinnup can get tracks out to streaming and download services.
We also touch on the history of how major labels dealt with the digital revolution, whether streaming services such as Spotify are treating artists fairly.
Paul talked about what the future holds for the industry, with new technology making it even easier to create and distribute music.
We discussed our favourite Scottish music and Paul championed his beloved Frightened Rabbit. He wasn’t having Wet Wet Wet though.
He even tells us how to accurately pronounce his surname.
